Authorities on Thursday released the names of a man and woman who were shot to death on Thanksgiving Day in Goleta in what investigators say was a murder-suicide.
The female homicide victim was Mayra Uriarte, 36, of West Valley City, Utah, a suburb of Salt Lake City, according to statement on the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office’s website.
She was killed by Manuel Altamirano Martinez, 37, of Mexico, the Sheriff’s Office said, adding that each died of a single gunshot wound.
The shootings occurred at about 11 a.m. Nov. 25 at the Best Western Hotel at 5620 Calle Real.
Both were transported to the hospital, where Martinez was declared dead shortly after arrival, and Uriarte passed away about four hours later, according to Raquel Zick, a sheriff’s spokeswoman.
“The decedents were in a previous relationship and share a child in common,” the Sheriff’s Office said.
The Sheriff’s Office has declined to provide any other details about the incident, including where the shootings occurred at the hotel, what type of weapon was used, and what circumstances may have led Martinez to kill Uriarte and himself.
Sources have told Noozhawk that Uriarte had family in the area, and that Martinez, who was her ex-husband and had a history of abusive behavior, followed her here. However, that could not be confirmed.
Uriarte reportedly owned and operated a popular restaurant in the Salt Lake City area.
According to a GoFundMe page set up to pay for her funeral expenses and to assist her children, Uriarte was a “very strong, independent, single mother raising her three young daughters.”
As of Thursday night, the GoFundMe page had raised $12,185 of a $15,000 goal. Click here to contribute.
